The two former nations that make up Western Europe are East Germany, which the Soviet Union and West Germany occupied. After Germany's defeat in World War II, a division occurred. A physical wall known as the Berlin Wall divided the two countries between 1961 and 1989.
In November 1989, the East German government announced that
its citizens could travel to West Berlin. People began climbing over the wall,
causing crowds to flock to Berlin. Eventually, the wall was torn down between 1990
and 1994. In 1974 and 2006, Germany hosted the World Cup.
