Australia is the sixth largest country in the world by area
and the largest country in Oceania. The mainland, the island nation of
Tasmania, and many smaller islands make up the region. It is often referred to
as the "Great Southern Land", "Oz" and "Down Under".
Vegemite, meat pies, sausage sizzles, pavlova, lamingtons, and Anzac biscuits
are all popular Australian foods.
One of the oldest continually existing cultures in the world
is Indigenous Australians. The First Fleet was a fleet of ships sent by the
British government to establish a penal colony in New South Wales in 1783.
Prisoners were first sent to Australia, often for relatively minor offenses.
